Mulching is almost common place in the landscape today. There are many benefits to mulching the landscape beds, such as holding down weeds, holding in moisture during drought, holding in ground heat during cold spells and last but not least, your lawn looking good!

WHY MULCH?

The purpose of mulching is to cover the roots of a plant, to hold in moisture and prevent erosion, to keep the roots cool in summer and warm in winter, to reduce weed growth in beds, and to make a landscape look clean and cared for.

OUR MOST POPULAR MULCH CHOICES:

Pines Straw (pine needles)- is a popular choice and is considered to be a bit less formal then wood mulch. It is great for natural wooded areas, especially if existing pine trees are already dropping needles. Pine straw is healthy for the landscape because it adds acid back to our alkaline middle Tennessee soil, feeding azaleas, rhododendron, evergreens and many other landscape plants. It also holds together fairly well and does not wash away as badly as some wood mulches and is usually the least expensive choice. Some think it is better for termite prevention than wood mulch. Pine straw must be replaced more often than wood mulches because it degrades and fades faster, so we recommend installing it 2x a year.

Shredded Pine Wood

Shredded Pine Wood is medium brown and a very popular premium mulch. It is a shredded product and holds together well The pine wood adds acid to the soil, and the natural color fades less quickly than some other wood mulches that are artificially dyed. (We don’t use those!) Since pine wood has light and dark pieces in it, the mulch also has a more natural appearance with lighter and darker pieces in it too.

Brown Shredded Hardwood

Brown Shredded Hardwood is a mix of hardwoods composted to reach a dark brown color that is a bit more formal than pine straw and shredded pine wood. It goes down with an attractive smooth appearance, keeps its color well, and is a shredded product so it holds together. Brown hardwood mulch sometimes has a pungent odor when it is first installed , but this lasts only a few days.

Midnight Black Hardwood

Midnight Black Hardwood is a mixed hardwood mulch that is considered the most formal. The good news: its smooth dark color is very dramatic, and it is also a shredded product so it holds together. The bad news: black mulches are often colored with charcoal that can be tracked inside by children and pets, staining rugs and upholstery. It also tends to fade to grey the quickest. Even so, we still have customers who request this mulch.

When To Apply Mulch

Mulch can be applied in any season and should be installed at least once a year. Some homeowners mulch every six months to keep it fresh. We always help with weed control and clean out beds before applying to get a clean look. Some homeowners like hardwood mulch around their home, and pine straw in outlying areas.
